Bean There, Done That!

It all started with the Jellybean factory in far-flung California. "The shop below the factory stocked the most delicious and scrumptious jellybeans with kids going mad all over the place," remembers Tanya Luther Agarwal. Lying neglected in a corner were a heap of irregular jellybeans going at half the price because of their odd shape. "It struck me then that nobody, even children, want to look at things not so nice…" She kept thinking about the experience and finally turned it into her first book for children, ‘The Jellybean Stories.’ Today, the psychologist and mother of two is writing her second and third book. She is also a consultant psychologist with the Indian School, Delhi, and has developed an Emotional Development Programme for children. Tanya always "itched to write’ but says that she had "nothing to say!" Now, after a couple of years of working with children, "there are so many issues that touch my heart’. Tanya’s children and students are her best critics and her second book ‘Tons of Buttons’ teaches kids about unity in diversity.

THE JELLYBEANS STORY

Author: Tanya Luther Agarwal

Price: Rs. 50

It shouldn’t be difficult to get your child to read this one; the cover puts it firmly in the ‘irresistible’ category. In fact the whole book is filled with big cheerful illustrations that contribute a great deal to the story-telling.

The story follows the lives of a pack of misshapen jellybeans that get stowed away in the darkest, dustiest corner of the store as they wait for a child to pick them up and take them home. It takes you through their fears about not being like the others, not fitting in and worst of all, not being wanted. The book aims to teach children to appreciate their own uniqueness and to sensitise them to those who are different.

It’s fairly simple story to follow and the author throws in some interesting puns now and again, but you’d want buy this book more for its vibrant design than its storyline. While it is a total feel good story that makes an honest attempt to break away from the usual stereotypes, whether is succeeds or not is debatable. What it will leave you with though, is a sudden craving for sweet sugarcoated candies that stick to you teeth.

The Jellybeans Story, tells the tale of the ‘flavoured friends’, jellybeans-‘those sweet looking, sweet tasting’ candies, that would enthrall your young child. With colourful illustrations by Ritu Luther (that could really tempt your child!). the book starts from the moment the beans are being created in the jellybean factory. The whole process, with the ‘mixing machine’, ‘Big Hands’, and the ‘I-Do-It-Best’ machine gives the story a novel feel and might engage your five-year-old. The moment of turning into jellybeans, being transported to shops in transparent bags is shown to be a proud moment in their ‘yummy lives’. The moment, that went very wrong for Burple Pie, Save-on-Lemon, Strawbelly, Fineapple, Momcorn and Bit-o-butter.

That is when the story takes on special messages for the child. The jellybeans, in their ‘irregular’ shape feel angry, disappointed, sad and imperfect. But, the way they overcome and learn from that makes the tale really heart-warming and special. A story of hope and self-acceptance that child would enjoy.
